Contest Closed

So I got a few ideas submitted, and I’m pretty sure I’ve figured out one winner and one project that I’ll do as a ‘something fun to do.’

Thanks to everyone who submitted ideas, I’ll be getting in touch with some of you for follow up very soon.

Wow! What a big Idea!

So I decided to have my first ever contest.  What sort of contest does a scripter have? The premise is simple:

Have the next CHIC hit?  Have a great idea and no idea how to pull it off?  Submit it and Chindogu Happiness Industrial Concern could build it and pay you for the privilege. It’s pretty much that simple. Between now and September 3rd submit an idea for something you’d like to see me build and if you’re the winning entry I’ll build it.

Winner’s will receive either

  • L$ 5,000 or
  • 20% of all of the year’s first sales on the product.

Second and third runners up will receive L$ 1,000 and 4th through 10th will receive copies of , unless they would prefer another product from my store of equal or lesser value.

Entries should be in in world in whatever format best serves the idea.  This can consist of textures, notecards, animations, prims, whatever it takes to get the idea across. Just put everything together in a prim and drop it on Alidar Moxie.

Entries will be judged on a few criteria*, namely

  • How fun will it be to work on?
  • How fun will the final product be?
  • How useful will the final product be?
  • Uniqueness
  • Actual Doability

Copyrights will be recognized to reside with their applicants and neither I nor anyone I designate to help judge or otherwise participate will assert any claim to entrant materials.  In the event we wish to use entry materials in promotional settings permission will be sought before doing so.  The winner may be asked to work exclusively with CHIC staff during the execution of the idea.

Entries are due September 3rd 23:59:59
Winner to be chosen by September 10th 23:59:59

* In the event of no qualifying entries, no prizes will be awarded.

I first heard we were going to get the ability to have ‘display names‘ yesterday on plurk.  There was a lot of concern, but in general I think this will be one of those things the community will adapt to and probably embrace whole heartily.  Knowing what I know about technical issues and the way software is put together I cannot imagine this needs to be implemented in such a way that will break much (OK, so my faith in LL is not unshakable, but it’s hard for me to imagine a scenario where they screw this up too badly) .

I’m relatively excited about this as well.  When I first signed up for my account I used the name ‘Alidar’ simply because I had used it for years in settings where gender was not an issue.  There were no pictures, genders, etc.  It seemed rather gender neutral, I liked it and so it followed me throughout the years.  Second Life was the first time that I really started identifying with someone named ‘Alidar’ and by the time that I realized I was identifying myself as her I was wishing I’d have chosen a somewhat more feminine name.  By that point of course it was too late, I had identified with her, made her my own, made friends and way too much of a giant inventory.  I just started telling people to call me ‘Ali’ and not worry about.  I assume other people have similar stories.

Will there be a couple of jerks who try to impersonate others, just like in real life, the difference here is that while it may take a couple of clicks to find the person’s real name, in the real world you may never find the person.

This is not the end of the world, ultimately this will not be the end of the grid as we know it.  The grid will adapt and we will forget the controversy, just like we did when LL started allowing people to buy islands, or Lindens or any of the other things we thought would be the end of the world.

Ali Gets Hired

I hosted my first Role Play event on Splintered Rock tonight.   I honestly expected to have the first night be a bust, but it was not.  My character, one Ali Dómari, got hired by the local ‘Big Media’ consortium as a ‘Planetary Consultant’.  You can sort of imagine what that entails.  She also got a rather strongly worded warning from the Mauraders about how all off worlders were going to burn and die.

All in good fun.

IntroPedia

As part of the new club I want to do a sort of clearing house of resources people who identified themselves as Introverts.  Everything from places we can go and spend some quality time alone to maybe that really cool group of people you have found that makes you feel welcome and accepted for who you are. I’m calling it the IntroPedia and hopefully it will be more than just me adding resources to it since my gut feeling is there are more of us out there than we like to pretend.

If you don’t feel like editing the wiki directly, that’s cool (I don’t particularly care for Wiki text either) just drop me an e-mail or send me a message on Plurk.

I’ll be adding my own stuff to it over the next day or two.

The Queen, Fish & Book

I am pleased to announce the opening of the The Queen, Fish & Book, a hang out for Introverts (members of Introverts of the Grid or not) where they can simply be themselves not worry about people going ‘why is that person not talking to me? that is so rude!’  I admit that one of my basic character flaws is not liking to release things or announce things quickly because I am afraid of finding issues or not having every last detail correct, but in this case I decided to push through it, so even though some of the things in the build are not 100% complete, I think there are enough things done to put it out there for opinions and solicit ideas.  Before anyone else mentions it, yes, I understand this concept is not going to be the easiest sell.

The basic design is a largish structure that I picked because it had several areas that could be set up for different purposes.  It was also large enough so that multiple people could be in it without feeling like they were right on top of each other.   Inside the build you will find a library (not pictured because I must have forgotten to click ‘save’) that I hope to add quite a bit of functionality to in the future, but for not will let you sit and play cards or just read on your own.

There is an information booth which I plan to allow other people to leave messages and resource information for each other at, sort of a clearing house for Introvert information.  I have most of it working, just have to finish it up.  For now you can use it to sign up for the in world group.

One of the things I like to do in RL is to drink a nice Scotch, so I provided a spot for that in the hang out.  You can have a coffee as well or take your choice of cigars.

On the second floor there is a workstation where you are free to sit for hours working on your latest masterpiece or scripting work.  There is also a media room which streams different channels (which group members can change) and show the same thing to everyone in the room.  This way in the rare case you want to pipe up MST-3000 style, you can.  There is also a video game there that multiple people can play (on the coffee table), I plan to add more video games in the near future.

Finally, outside, you can sit on a deck

and strike up a game a chess or stare out at the Zen garden (that you can work in)

Or you can decide to just lay in the sun and work on your tan (the drinks are free)

So, stop by and say hi (or not of course), but certainly let me know what you think.  There are some rough edges I am working on and some services I am planning on adding, so I appreciate all your feedback.

Coming Along

I got a good price on some beach mainland so I bought it and have spent several days buying furniture and decorating, putting together the hangout I mentioned in the last post ()  I also tried out a few different building designs and tried building some myself.  In the end though a store recommended by Paypabak had a great built that I loved (you can see it in the shot behind me).

So far the club (though I don’t like the connotations of that word) has the following amenities for my fellow Introverted Travelers to enjoy

  • Bar area
    • Read, drink, or smoke quietly alone or with others.
  • Reading nook
    • Play card games and read. I have a cool idea for this area that I am still exploring, let’s see if it gets off the ground.
  • Desk area
    • Think of it as a place to sit and get some work done when you have some scripting or notecards or IMs to do.
  • Information Area
    • Mostly decoration at the moment, but I hope to have sort of a ‘clearing house’ of resources for people.
  • Living Room
    • Place to watch TV.  Like a common video stream.
    • I hope to add some video games to this, but we’ll see what’s up.
  • Outside lounge
    • Simply a place to sit outside and enjoy waves and / or sun.

I’m also working on a way to do a sort of driving range into the sea (it may require a slight modification to the golf system I like so I’m in touch with the creator) and some general decor / landscaping.

I still have a bit of work to do, but I’m trying to make everything in the vein of come and be as alone and quiet as you want, without being pressure to talk to anyone but with friendly people.  I for instance like to work near other people and with music or a TV going even if we are not talking, and I want people to feel comfortable doing that.

I imagine that if this place works at all it is going to take some experimentation, so cross your fingers. Why not publish the location yet? because I’d rather get a few more things done first, that’s all.

So I’m currently toying around with the idea of buying some mainland and have it narrowed down to a couple of plots.  I’ll probably make a selection today or tomorrow morning.  What could bring me to want to do this you may ask?

A couple of things, but mainly the idea that maybe I want to open a place for quiet people to come and hang out and relax and talk, sort of a chill spot for my Introverts of the Grid group ().  I know, this sort of seems doomed to fail, but there are times when we would like to hang around each other if only to watch each other read or say ‘hello’.

Some things surprised me about the mainland.  The first was that it seems prices may have fallen a bit since I purchased last (it has been a while), one was the sheer amount of land available that had views of water or roads, and another was the number of people who will lower a bit land and call it ‘beach land’.

I guess, more updates as they occur.

I was going through my inventory and decided to take some pictures.   Then I said ‘why not see what I can do with them with my non-existent Photoshop skills?’

I didn’t think I had so many clothes, but I think I need some newer and up to date stuff.  I think the above (click on it to see a full size version) shows off my style pretty well, so do you have any suggestions?

Ali Dómari

Ali Dómari

So I wanted to get back into Role play a bit and decided that I also wanted to keep my Neko ears on for a while.  I had just finished reading Heritics of Dune and remembered the race of cat people called ‘Futars’ so it seemed like a fit.  Luckily for me Splintered Rock is still kicking and I was able to create a character along the lines of what I had in mind.

Ali Dómari’s mother was a Sword Master and her father was a Futar. Circumstances caused her to be raised in an abbey / orphanage. She eventually moved on to a several schools where she learned the ins and outs of several bodies of law and customs on many worlds, similar to a court lawyer or magistrate. While this education was wildly expensive, one generally undertaken at the behest, payment, and direction of a major house. While rumors of a Great House’s involvement have been heard, no source of the funds have ever been disclosed. She generally carries a Katana that she has been heard to call her “diploma”.

So, that’s it.  We’ll see what happens.  I’m hoping this leads me branching outside of my comfort zone a bit and getting acquainted with some new people.
